| "Good Idea - Wrong Layer" - is correct and if we all had fast hardware and plenty of bandwidth, we wouldn't be bothering. The reality for me is that I've been working on a 3-Tier architecture, where the Http server is separated from the Application Server and the amount + size of the packets sent between them both is substantial. My Servlet Container produces a large amount of html which needed to be compressed before it was sent to the Http server. The Http Server then GZips and serves the rest of the content (images / css / js / xsl) complete with the GZipped content from the Servlet Container. | ||
