I just read your article on PHP connect to mySQL database. // Connect to the server at hostname using the specified port $server = 'hostname:port' I need to connect from my Windows app w/JDBC to the mySQL server on a Unix platform across the net. In your connect statement above, how do I get the port value? Any insights is very much appreciated! Thanks, Cristl

The default value of mysql port is 3306.
So you can use 'hostname:3306'.
