Unless you want to force your users to wait for the server to do everything, JavaScript is a must for today's complex web applications. We use it quite a bit to give immediate responses to users for forms validation and manipulation. In addition, we also use JavaScript behind the scenes to manipulate information that will be passed back to the server.

It helps that our work is done on a corporate intranet, so we can be fairly sure of a standard base of tools, but even for internet work, JavaScript is really useful. The more I work with it, the more I grow to like it. If you have a background in Perl, you'll find that many of the coolest features of the language (associative arrays, regular expressions, etc) are supported in JavaScript. If you don't have a background in Perl, learn to use these features - they'll make your life much easier. It took me several years before I stumbled across using objects as hashes, and now I use them all the time.
