Haven't found any useful information on whether or not the Freevo or Myth packages have any add-ons that can IR control cable and/or dish receivers like the TiVo can. Any comments on this from anyone?

  Yup. MythTV controls Sony and RCA DirecTV receivers through their serial or RJ11 ports.
