i found your maintenance tips to be very useful and informative. but i do hv a question. instead of running those maintenance tips (forced periodic maintenance) via Terminal, would i be able to attain the same efficacy if i were to use software utilities that do the same functions? a utility like Brian Hill's MacJanitor, perhaps, which can be found at http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html.

First of all, thanks for the kind words, I really do appreciate them !
When it comes to performing such basic tasks, I usually prefer to use the Terminal since it doesn't require me to install a third-party application and gives me more flexibility.
However, you're right : there are some good utilities that perform these tasks with a nice interface — most of them simply run an AppleScript™ that executes the same commands.
Unfortunately, I cannot comment on their features but, as long as they run the exact same commands, they should have the same effects.
You may want to perform a search in a Mac-related forum to gather some more information about the various options. The AppleCare discussion forums ( http://discussions.info.apple.com/ ) are, in my experience, the best place to find such answers.
