Hi ! S.M.A.R.T. analysis is now part of the Mac OS X "client" version too. However, it requires your hard drive to support it and, therefore, to be relatively new. Would you hard drive be too old or not support S.M.A.R.T., no information will appear at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.

  I have a new iMac two weeks old with HFS+ Journalling
  and 10.3 but SMART does not show on Disk Utility -
  is it only there if I boot with CD in - I usually just Sleep so it's a pity if any Disk Utility features are only available when rebooting

  That's interesting indeed ! I performed some tests and was always able to see the computer's S.M.A.R.T. status by using the « Disk Utility », even without booting from the CD.
  
  However, in order to see the status, you will have to click on the name of your hard drive ( 37.3 GB TOSHIBA, for example ) and not the name of the boot partition ( Dex's 7 Gig )...

  Only certain drive manufacturers (such as IBM/Toshiba) support SMART. New drives from other manufacturers will generally not include this feature.

  That is truly weird. My original equipment (G4 400 AGP) Quantum 9 gig as well as my 1.5 year old Maxtor 40 gig both show S.M.A.R.T. status as verified.
  
  From the online help:
  Most disk drives include S.M.A.R.T. hardware developed by IBM that allows hard disks to test themselves for potential problems. You can check the health of your hard disk in Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities.
  
  If you've been having some problems with your computer, it's a good idea to check the status of the hard disk.
  
  To check the status of a disk:
  
  Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the disk in the left column. Look at the bottom of the window to see the S.M.A.R.T. status.
  
  If your disk is "verified," it's a valid disk with nothing wrong at this time. If you see "About to Fail" in red letters, back up your disk immediately and have the disk replaced. It will fail.
