VDR is in fact THE linux-based solution - but only for digital Television broadcasts. I run it at home, and, among other things, it can - record as many programs as the same time as hardware allows - timeshift - include EPG data from different sources - cut movies and burn it straight to DVDs (including DVD Menus) - convert the recordings to DIVX, SVCD and other formats - switch on and off your computer automatically for recordings - supply 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound to your AV-Receiver if it is broadcasted - Play DIVX, SVCD, DVDs and other formats via the DVB Card. Anything mplayer can play
