when someone earlier talked about a standard linux, where everything, from all distributions,from applications to interfaces should be standardised to one standard. This is quite correct I think. When Linux is being installed have an international "Standard Install", available on all linux distors.this would automaticaly handle partitions everything except the root password. With a standard desktop. BUT allow for everything to be customisable, u get me? Standardised but totaly customisable. so the desktop layout, should be researched and then standardised across the board, but should be totlay customisable, menu's and everything. That would make things a lot easier(at least I think).
