My experience with Linux as a home hobbyist was similar to this article (simple, fun, cheap) until I hooked it up to the Internet. After some effort I can now stay up about 24 hours before being hacked into unusability. I'm sure that the ORA tome on Linux security would advise me on this but I'm loathe to spend more on documenting just this aspect of Linux than I did on the entire OS.

A few, quick Safari (safari.oreilly.com) searches might give you answers. You can search the whole site, which includes books from other publishers, or you can search specific titles, like Linux Security Cookbook and Linux Server Hacks. If you aren't subscribed to Safari, you won't have access to entire passages and full code, but there's a free trial going on. Safari can be a pretty painless way to solve specific problems.
