Yes, the syntax of Makefiles was just 'horrible'. Having "target: dependsOn1 dependsOn2 dependsOn3", followed by a list of commands to build the target was just crazy. Having to write XML by hand is much saner. And now it sounds like I get to write my own XSLT and XML and Jelly. And once I've learned all those and got that all up and working, I can code in that language I'm supposed to be working in.. ..now what was it again anyway?

    I'm thinking specifically of sytactically requiring the tab character before commands. Not four spaces, or any other kind of whitespace. Unless you also chose to use a make-aware text editor (like emacs) that would do the right thing for you, this was a staggeringly evil trap.
