You wrote that much of the new security documentation "consists of little more than long lists of possible configuration settings with little help on which values are best to choose". Emotionally I agree with you, but on the other hand how could some back room guys in Seattle who have never laid eyes on my network know which settings are right for me? I guess working that out is what I get paid for. |

I guess what I'm saying is, I wish MS would take a more scenario-based approach in their security documentation e.g. "If your server is running this in this environment with this and this, then this setting could be changed to this but don't change this as it will result in this" etc.
I think more of that sort of thing would probably be helpful for administrators who are just too overworked to read through thousands of pages of documentation looking for security issues to address. Make sense?
