I always had the impression that the ports system was very quick and dirty, but from what I've seen it seems to have almost all of the features of debians apt-get, and some that apt-get doesn't have. In future articles, perhaps you could cover troubleshooting for the ports system ( such as difficulty fetching distfiles, inconsistent ports tree, etc ). Keep up the good work!
