No it's not outdated. I use Mandrake 9.1, and have tried installing a variety of programs that I could never get to run.

Family tree software, CD-track loggers, video-splicers, etc. Couldn't get 'em to work ... so I just sometimes book into Win98 and use the programs that I used to use.

I *never* had problems installing stuff in Windows. Pity Linux can't be like that!

Windows is such a convenient tool to deploy viruses and worms: you receive a program attached in an email and execute it.

Urpmi does solve a lot of this, but requires that you find alternative sources for stuff that isn't part of Mandrake. Even then, some programs might not be fully supported as to all dependencies, although matters are improved. So compiling from source is sometimes the only way, and that requires some research to make sure all dependencies are met...since the library problem doesn't go away, unless you can find a statically compiled binary somewhere. (One reason why such binaries are supplied by, for instance, Opera. But this is not a solution, just an inelegant work-around.)
