Legacy scanners? You mean the scanners they sold for many months with promises that OS-X drivers were right around the corner? They are liars of the worst sort- vaporware liars.

Hello anon,

Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard?s Customer Care Center.

Based on the details of the e-mail, it appears that you are inquiring about drivers for the 4400c scanner to connect in the Macintosh OS 10.X environment.

Unfortunately the 4400c scanner is not yet supported in the Macintosh OS 10.2 environment. I understand the frustration of not being able to have the driver for the scanner to operate in the OS of your choice. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this has caused you. We assure you our website will be updated.

Hewlett-Packard is working diligently with Apple to resolve this driver issue as soon as possible. We regret that we are not able to provide additional information on software that has not yet been released.

We have provided a link for your convenience to sign up for driver updates and alerts, once the driver?s do become available you will be notified via your e-mail then you can contact us at 1-800-474-6836 and one of our customer care professionals will be glad to assist you.

NOTE: It may be necessary to cut and paste the above URL, or any following URLs into the web address bar of your Internet browser

An alternative workaround is to use the scanner in Mac OS 9, until the new OS 10.2 driver becomes available. (if your Macintosh has OS 9 installed as well as OS X)
1. Click the ?System Preferences? within your OS 10 dock
2 Click ?Startup Disk?.
3. Click OS 9 from the menu.
4. Choose ?Restart? then ?Save and Restart?
5. Your system will restart in OS 9.
6. Unplug the USB cable from the Mac
7. Install the software into OS 9
8. Your computer should restart itself again into OS 9.
9. Plug the scanner back into the USB port.
10. Scan as normal.
11. To return to OS 10, click on the apple on the main menu bar and then click the ?Control Panels?
12. Click ?Startup Disk? and then click on OS 10 and choose ?Restart?
13. Your system will restart into OS 10.
14. You may now retrieve any documents or images from the folder in which they were saved.

Once again, thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Customer Care Center.

Please update that page with a new set of lies about when you will
fulfill your promise to support Mac OS 10 with your Scanjet 4400C by
writing a driver.

And, oh yeah, then send me a canned response telling me it will be
available in late summer.

Vaporware Nomination: Hewlett Packard Scanjet 4400 driver for Mac OS X
as on http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,56697,00.html

Now is the winter of our discontent, for we Scanjet 4400/Mac owners
have
been promised an OS X driver by summer, fall, late fall, and so on and
forever... while Hewlett Packard counts our money, laughing from one
side of their mouth all the way to the bank, and promising support from
the other side.

I am sure if HP and Apple wanted to get the driver done, it would be
done.
Apparently, someone doesn't really give a damn.

I bought a Hewlett Packard Scanjet 4400C Color Scanner in February,
2002.
Up until now, I have been an avid purchaser of HP products for 30
years;
I trusted them to be true to their word to support their hardware on
the
Mac-
however, they have lost my confidence. Any time I want to use my
scanner,
I have to boot into Mac OS 9, since HP has never yet supported OS X or
Classic
environment with any driver for the Scanjet 4400C.

"As a leading provider of Mac-connect peripherals, HP is proud to offer
a full range of Mac OS X native solutions for Mac OS X v.10.1 to 10.1.5
and the new Mac OS X v10.2 (Jaguar). There will be different levels of
support for Jaguar during the first month of introduction,
depending on the product."
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpm35001.html

In this case, the "different level of support" is "none".

Thank you for contacting the Product Support Technical Center at the
new HP.

HP currently does not provide Mac OS X support for the ScanJet
scanners.
New software is forthcoming, and is expected to become available in
Summer, 2002.
Please check the following web site for information regarding the
release of this software:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpm35006.html"

(Later, their website claimed the software would be available in the
fall.)
When mid-fall arrived, I wrote again:

We apologize for any frustration caused by delay in the release of HP
ScanJet software for Mac OS X. HP is committed to offering software
for Mac OS X. HP has been in the process of updating many current
Macintosh driver/software solutions to provide support in the Mac OS X
environment. HP ScanJet software is expected to be available Late
Autumn 2002; please refer to the following page for Mac OS environment
compatibility and further updates on the availability of HP scanner
software for Mac OS X:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpm35006.html"

That page notes as of Dec-17-2002:

"NOTE: The current scanner software drivers for Mac OS X will no
longer
function on Macintosh systems upgraded to Mac OS v. 10.2.2.
Hewlett-Packard is working with Apple to provide a working solution.
Please check back to this Web page for information regarding new driver
updates."
(all referring to other drivers- the situation deteriorates...)

and in the case of the HP 4400C, no OS X driver has ever been released-
so there was never even anything to stop working.

If anyone finds a way to drive this scanner in OSX ir classic please let me know. reddelmt@umdnj.edu

I'm mad as hell having bought a HP Scanjet 4400c scanner in August 2002 with promises of Mac OSX compatibility. Despite the box advertising and frequent promises of an imminent release on their website for over a year now, HP still hasn't delivered on the driver issue.

If you can't figure out how to get a simple arrayed dataset from a peripheral to a UNIX based OS (Mac OSX) with a driver less than 50 MB in size then maybe it's time to fire your programmers or get out of the scanner business.

    Truely pathetic !

The problem is not with Hewlett-Packard, the problem exists with Apple. Apple's inability to create an operating system that does not have to be updated with major changes every 3 weeks causes companies like Hewlett-Packard to have to continue to update their software to please the ever demanding Macintosh user.

Hewlett-Packard has failed to deliver the driver but due to the constant change of the Macintosh system has been forced to develop newer software for all of the supported Macintosh products. I deal with Macintosh systems on a regular basis and because of the product support I will never purchase a Macintosh for use in the real world. The constant updating of the Macintosh OS causes hardware vendors to search for information on the newest OS to make the drivers for there hardware is available. As a Mac user the dumbest move is to update the operating system without the driver being available. Hewlett-Packards failure to produce a driver could easily be blame on the 100 dollar product instead of putting the blame on the more expensive Macintosh computer.

Hewlett-Packard's constant delay of the driver for the Scanjet 4400 should be addressed but the real issue is with the instable Macintosh OS 10 that has changed enough time to deter any company from producing any hardware for the Macintosh system.

Ok, lets be honest at least. OS X IS updated on a regular basis.

That said, your point is way off. OS X is not updated anymore than any major OS today. The updates are small updates as well. Taken a look at at the windows update list these days? Mostly security patches but core files are being updated.

OS X is based on a well known set of code and a standard driver model has been in place for some time. USB is also a standard. The problem is HP releasing a scanner and selling to both the Mac and Windows market as a USB Scanner. my understanding is that it is a parallel-port scanner internally, with an internal USB-parallel converter. Hence the issue with OS X USB. Cost of the scanner is not an issue.

Oh yeah, other scanners, from HP and other companies, manage to stay up-to-date, so it must be possible. Using your argument, all HP products should be lacking drivers but that is not the case. Even HP thought they could have drivers by 9/02. That was the original release date posted on the HP site. Then 11/02, then first QTR of 03. Only 3 scanners on the list still do not support OS 10.2.3-10.2.6, the 4400, 5300, and 6300. Of those, all are supported on 10.1.3-10.1.5 except the 4400. It is the ONLY ONE with NO OS X Support. That is HP, but your email shows your position before you even type.

All operating systems require updating so the suggestion that Apple are in some way different from other Manufacturers is unfair. I think your email address may suggest a bias in your views. It is not unreasonable to assume that peripheral manufacturers would support common operaring systems.
