A excellent alternative to CVS is Perforce (http://www.perforce.com). Perforce has the best support I've ever experienced and it is free (with free support too) for one or two users. Plus, they've just released a GUI for MacOS X called p4v with version 2003.1 I use perforce for everything, hardware design, software, documentation, even publishing my web site from my internal server to the main hosting site.   Xcode apparantly supports using Perforce as a SCM system.
  
  Altough what I really want it Bitkeeper support, or an open API that I can develop a bitkeeper plug-in...
