Yes, you can use iText in a standalone Java application. iText can be used in a client or a desktop application.

There is a derived version of iText (http://itextpdf.sourceforge.net) which runs under JDK1.1
This one will work fine even in a Lotus Notes Java agent. I've used it with great success.
