On item (4): he was probably referring to messaging middleware, which provides transaction support. All investment banks use this heavily (typically IBM MQSeries), and thre is no Open Source version.

    What about JBoss and OpenJMS?
    Also,My guess is since he mentioned email that he is
    speaking about person-to-person messaging instead of
    middleware.

      Open source person to person messaging frameworks are already available, Jabber leaps to mind.

      Since he used the term "reliable" I am sure he is talking about a MSMQ and MQSeries open source replacement.
