I installed MySQL in /usr/local/mysql using the pkg you recommended.

However, running:

/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin status

results in:

/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'

at /tmp/ I see three files, none of which are named mysql.sock

so (1) what does this error message really mean?
(2) what went wrong?
(3) how do I fix it?
