The GRUB config file name is menu.lst; "grub.conf" is a Red Hat-ism. Look at the GNU GRUB page, reference the online documentation (one page for the whole doc) and search for "menu.lst" - you'll find many references. Search for "grub.conf" and you won't find any at all. In RH systems, menu.lst is a symlink to grub.conf. Why it wasn't done the other way around I don't know.
