Just spotted a typo in sendMessage: NSDate messageData = [NSData .... should be: NSData messageData = [NSData .... Simple enough. Good article otherwise. I always fancied doing some network programming. I noticed that Stepwise has an article comparing various Obj-C wrappers for sockets. Worth a look.
