What am I missing here? And be kind, I know just enough about computers and electronics to do harm to myself and those stupid enough to stand to close to me.

What would stop someone, in theory, from using a pair of the SpeedStream Powerline Ethernet Adapters to share high-speed access between neighbors and friends down the block? The Siemens site says that the network for security reasons ends at you walls. How? And is there a hack?

Homeplug specification mandates the use of encrypted data.
Not even the security keys are transferred in "plain text"

Based on experience with X10 devices, I'd guess that the signal could
make it to other houses attached to the same pole transformer as yours.

Unless you live in a Faraday cage the wireless portion of your network will more than likely transmit beyond the confines of your dwelling. Be sure to use SSL/TLS when sending sensitive info such as passwords, credit card numbers, and any other data you wouldn't send on a postcard.

No, I don't think the original poster was talking about the wireless...he was refering to the power line connection. Wouldn't someone who is on the same power grid (and relatively close to the home) possibly be able to access you connection? Would they be able to access the data being transmitted because they use current from the same line?

If you are on the same side of the transformer it is a possibility.

Yes that is the question. The wireless is to expensive if I want to reach his house.
