  Actually it brings up an interesting idea .. the powerline adapter operates in the 4.3MHz - 20.9MHz band (HF band) with the wireless component in the 2.4GHz (UHF band) - you should be able to excite a confined gas in a flourescent tube in both of those ranges - so theoretically, you could produce fluctuations that could be detected with a calibrated photosensor.
  
  Now, if you do this correctly and have the proper flourescent tubes, you shouldn't even need to wire the tubes to anything .. you should be able to excite the gas molecules simply by placing them somewhere close enough to the source .. of course you might have to boost power to the transmitter, which might take you out of the legal FCC spec for wireless 802.11[abg]
