Access points on top of lamp posts would make great
sense for a public access network in urban streets.

(What is the US term for the lighting poles in
urban streets?)

Westminster Council in London have plans for a
network for their employees only in the Soho area.
Putting the APs on top of lampposts - which they
after all own - would be an excellent idea.

      Street Light.

(...yes, I'm fully aware my language makes no sense. Never realized how little sense it made before I had to start explaining things to Japanese exchange students though.)

Sure, it's a reasonable idea - that's why it was done close to 10 years ago by Ricochet. (It turns out that they were originally trying to provide a self-organizing net of sensors to monitor power levels, to save money for the utility, and then turned around and marketed the data service; a $400 or so modem that got you about 128k bps, so expensive by todays standards.) One issue is that you have to actually have power *all* the time on the light socket - some of them are "bank switched" rather than having local photocells. (Also, in the ricochet model you didn't need ethernet to *all* of them, just some of them, and the rest would do local wireless hops to the one with the outside connection.)

Ricochet was a cool idea, but it wasn't this idea.

I dig the bit about how they were using ISM for backhaul and reselling it back to the public via their licensed gear. Maybe they got too greedy? Who knows.

Maybe next time. Oh, wait, there's not another next time. The cat's out of the bag ;)

I meant ricochet == the idea of AP's on top of lampposts that started this subthread, rather than the "integrate into lightsockets" part. Excellent picture...

(I do adore the light-assembly, as a prototype, maybe it'll inspire someone to design an approvable one, with a screw-thread socket "pass-through" so you can just drop it into a normal socket....)
