Hack:   The NoCat Night Light

There's a hack where one can *read* bit streams by observing the blinking LEDs attached to a device such as a modem, router or a network card.

Would the flourescent light in this case be transmitting the WIFI signal in the visible spectrum?

I cant imagine how this can be a security problem (remember, this is broadcast concurrently over the 2.4GHz spectrum), but its intresting none the less.

What an idiot. The "hack" to read the bitstream only works on certain modems/nic's that actually blink the activity light for every bit that passes through, which is a SMALL percent of modems/nic's. Now why the fuck would you think a flouresent light wired in direct parralell would blink or flicker to the bit rate on this device? Read the fucking manual, view the diagrams, read the article and get a fucking clue.

Actually it brings up an interesting idea .. the powerline adapter operates in the 4.3MHz - 20.9MHz band (HF band) with the wireless component in the 2.4GHz (UHF band) - you should be able to excite a confined gas in a flourescent tube in both of those ranges - so theoretically, you could produce fluctuations that could be detected with a calibrated photosensor.

Now, if you do this correctly and have the proper flourescent tubes, you shouldn't even need to wire the tubes to anything .. you should be able to excite the gas molecules simply by placing them somewhere close enough to the source .. of course you might have to boost power to the transmitter, which might take you out of the legal FCC spec for wireless 802.11[abg]

Your response was completely inapropriate. It was a simple and harmless question. I'm sure that YOU'VE asked some pretty stupid questions before... as we ALL have.
