Hack:   Real music sharing with Rendezvous over wireless
Subject:   osX multiuser OS/itunes sharing silliness

From:   mdaitzman
OSX is a multiuser OS, my computers at home all have 5 or 6 users who may be logged in at any time.

My music on my downstairs imac which i want to access via itunes seems to require that I be LOGGED in as myself AND running itunes.

Since I can share that music when logged off, or logged in as someone else, onto my TIVO it seems like I should be able to do the same with itunes.

Any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks!

Since iTunes is responsible for actually sharing the music, it has to be running in order for the other devices on your network (like your TiVo) to see it. Unless you can run some other program to advertise rendezvous streams, I think you'll have to run iTunes.

I've seen other rendezvous streamers, such as MP3 Sushi, but I don't know if they'll work with a TiVo.

A better solution might be a dedicated machine to house and stream / play / advertise all of your music for you. I highly recommend Linux and a multicast DNS advertiser for this job (but more on that in a later Hack... ;)
