If you want a solid performer with great support, you won't find it for free. As far as SAMBA, find the SAMBA mailing list and look at all the problems - but that's what you get with a reverse engineered product (unpredictability). Why don't you just search for windows and nfs on goolge and eval some products - they aren't that expensive. IMO
