I have recently added a D-link DWL5000AP access point and a DWL-A650 laptop card to my home network. I am impressed by the speed of the data flow, as long as you don't mind staying close to the access point. I'm talking a max of 25 feet to avoid disconnects and data dropouts from a broadband connection. Very disappointing. I am going to flash the bios to the latest level in hope it will improve the range. If not, I will transition to 802.11g very soon.

I don't thing 11a is your problem, it's the hardware. I have a Netgear 11a/11b AP and stay connected to the 11a radio, thru my house and backyard.
