I've been using a Treo 270 for the better part of a year. I'd carried various combinations of pagers, cell phones, and laptops (though never a PDA) prior to getting the Treo, and they were all sub-optimal.


With the Treo, I have a full replacement for a cellular phone, pager, and PDA, and a partial replacement for a laptop, in a device that fits comfortably into one pocket. If I need more functionality, I can plug the Treo into my laptop and use it as a 9600 baud modem.


Obligatory anecdote:


Shortly after I got the Treo, I went on call. Around 10pm on Saturday night I decided to go bowling. Halfway to the lanes I got a phone call reporting a problem -- not a "drop everything" emergency, but something that needed to be fixed sooner rather than later. I told the operator I'd look at it in about ten minutes, hung up, and drove off.


When I got to the lanes, I used the Treo to SSH into the company network, diagnose the problem, and fix it. I sent an e-mail to the other admins detailing the problem and the fix, and sent an SMS to the operator explaining that it was fixed and that they should page me with any further problems. Two minutes later I got a return SMS with confirmation and a thanks.


Not bad for a guy sitting in a parked car outside a bowling alley on a Friday night <g>.

      I did a quick search on www.treocentral.com for "modem" and sorted through the results - coming up with:

        It works, It's not DSL-speed... (19.2k) BUT IT WORKS (over IR for PC or USB for Mac). Now about getting that SMS issue fixed....
