If root dumps a big core your lean and mean / might fill up with a corefile. I've seen a 56Mb core on a 76Mb / causing serious trouble.


With a major update of your OS a tight / might ruin your day as well.

    The idea here is of course that a OS update will not fill up root if it does there is something wrong in the first place. The OS upgrade should and will use /var /usr to do it thing not /.
    Having said that with nowedays cheap storage 100Mb is a bit on the small side although I have multiple installation running fine that way
