If you're having this problem (which I was for days and even after several removal/re-installs) I have seemingly found a solution that corrects the problem. I ended up making a php.ini file located in /usr/local/lib/ that specifies where the mysql.sock is. I found out that the sockt (at least on my machine) was running in /tmp/mysql.sock So I configured the php.ini to read as follows: mysql.default_socket = /tmp/mysql.sock And voila. Hope this helps.

couldn't you have just moved the mysql.sock where it wants it!
