I'm not exactly a newbie, but I've not been installing from scratch in any way as I run SuSE, though I have very much liked Debian for many reasons. I have been running linux since mid-1997. I'm afraid my familiarity with fine tuning linux is somewhat limited. I do prefer to grub to lilo and ReiserFS or ext3FS to standard install. I'd like to take a stab at Gentoo, though as yet I'm not fully sure how it differs from Debian in the social contract. (I only recently stumbled on Gentoo.)
