Having only looked at a few online articles about Rails in the past, and wondering how it all works, this book was recommended to me from a local Ruby group as the definitive reference.

I totally agree. The way the book is laid-out is perfect. I want a high-level overview, and then each chapter should take me lower and lower into the guts of the system. This book has exactly that, starting with a quick sample app that you can code right away.

The later chapters take you deeper and deeper into Rails and show you how it all works. How and when to break from convention for legacy systems, gracefully handling errors, scaling, etc.

It's rare that I find a technical manual that is a page-turner rivaling the latest novel that I'm reading. This is one.
