I went into my bookshop (early-Jan 04) with the sole intention of buying a book about the iPod. This was the only one on the shelf. I'm keen to do my homework before buying an iPod. This book I'm sure, will allow me to hit the ground running once I do purchase my iPod sometime in the spring.

The book itself is immensely readable, jargon free, great value and amusing. My tip (as a Windows XP user) is to ignore the references in the book to MusicMatch software, and instead read the Mac sections that are all about iTunes. Having downloaded iTunes for Windows before Xmas and had a play, starting to get my cd collection in shape ready for the great day I download all my music to my new iPod helped. The early sections of the book are much more comprehensible if you do already have iTunes installed on you computer, even if, like me you don't yet have an iPod. Having said that, there is an excellent tutorial on how iTunes works, so just make a bee line for that chapter if you need a crash course in iTunes.

What I like about this book is it is equally comprehensive for both Mac users and Windows users and totally non-biased. You get the impression that the author knows her way around both operating systems and also legacy iPods for those who already have an earlier generation model. This book is great to read on the bus, on the sofa, and ultimately when you break the little bugger out of its box.

My advice to anyone thinking about getting an iPod is to download iTunes from the Apple website; get this book; get an iPod and pop a few tracks from "The Darkness" on it! Thanks J.D. for a great book!

"One of the beauties of the Missing Manuals is that there is always something new to discover and the research is quite thorough...I kept finding snippets of information, in the way of Tips or Notes, that would give just that bit extra."
