I have a number of O'Reilly books in my library... well, OK, scattered hither and yon all over my house, my car, and most recently... in my vest pocket. No, that wasn't a typo, I recently started carrying one or another of the O'Reilly Pocket Reference books with me in the inside pocket of a cargo vest.

This one was recently translated from the German Gimp kurz & gut, (GIMP short & good) published in March of 1999. Despite the deviation from the original title, this book makes for a very good short reference book indeed.

The GIMP, Gnu Image Manipulation Program, is an extremely useful and versatile binary, and the versatility is what makes the book, if not necessary, then at least desirable. It address the 1.2 version of the GIMP, outlining the various menus, functions, and scripts available to the user. I knew something of how to use the GIMP previously, however after a few weeks of perusing this little gem of knowledge in my spare time and while actually doing some photo manipulation, my horizon has expanded considerably.

Though not a complete course in the use of the GIMP, if necessary, one could learn to use it from reading the book and keeping it handy beside the keyboard. Buy this one. At $9.99, it is a bargain, especially for an O'Reilly book, and you will never regret your purchase.
