Writes Antone Gonsalves of TechWeb.com:
Users of the open-source database will soon be able to get consulting, integration, and support services from Hewlett-Packard…Hewlett-Packard Co. on Tuesday said it plans to roll out next month consulting, integration and support services for customers implementing the MySQL open source database…HP plans to sell the services directly in May, and via channel partners in June. The announcement was made at the annual MySQL Users Conference in Santa Clara, Calif.
HP’s VP Christine Martino
“Hewlett-Packard is turning itself into a one-stop support shop for MySQL database users,” observed Lisa Vaas last Tuesday. “On April 25, HP plans to announce at the MySQL Users Conference here that it is expanding its support for the open-source database with consulting, integration, support services and reselling of MySQL Network subscription services by HP’s channel partners.”
“MySQL’s chief executive has cast himself as both friend and foe of closed-source database companies, criticizing partners and competitors for releasing ‘crippled’ versions of existing database products,” writes Gavin Clarke.
Dave Rosenberg over at the Open Sources blog stopped by the MySQL Users Conference this week. He didn’t mention the conference (PR Gal sighes regretfully), but has three posts on conference sponsors:
Five Runs–Open Source Systems Management
FiveRuns offers system management software, both as open source software and as a hosted service. Functionality includes monitoring, analyzing, reporting and predicting system health.
Zmanda–Open Source Data Protection
There is a huge market for storage products, backup and recovery, data protection and such. In the open source space, only Zmanda seems to be making any progress with the open source approach to this problem.
SolidDB and MySQL making open source databases better for enterprise
According to Paola Lubet, VP of Marketing at SolidDB, the major roadblock for OSS databases into mission-critical environments is the real time nature of transactional data. SolidDB has been developing real-time databases for the last 14 years with features that go beyond basic storage

More from Lisa Vaas’ Reporter’s Notebook:
With all the good news about storage engines coming out of the MySQL Users Conference, why weren’t MySQL cofounders Widenius and Axmark dancing on stage, punching the air and crying, “Engines, engines, engines!”?
“Any lingering doubts about MySQL’s ability to cook up its own darn storage engines in the wake of Oracle’s having bought two out from under it are now deader than doorknobs,” writes Lisa Vaas. “To wit: MySQL opened its Users Conference in Santa Clara, Calif., on April 24 with a veritable gusher of storage engine goodness.”
Rich Seeley just posted an article on the LogicBlaze announcment:
LogicBlaze Inc. and MySQL yesterday announced a partnership that brings together many of the hottest commodities in IT: service-oriented architecture, LAMP stack development and Ajax.
The combination, called LogicBlaze FUSE for MySQL, brings together LogicBlaze’s enterprise service bus (ESB) platform, available as an Apache License 2.0 open source download, with the MySQL database. The partnership, unveiled Tuesday on the opening day of the MySQL User Conference 2006 in Santa Clara, Calif., is targeted at architects and developers working with the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python) programming model, as well as Ajax, said Rich Peterson, vice president marketing for LogicBlaze.
Stephen Shankland writes:
Mickos, speaking at the MySQL Users Conference here on Wednesday, praised Oracle and took it to task for different elements of its software. The contrast stems from the fact that, on the one hand, MySQL relies on software called InnoDB that Oracle acquired in 2005, and on the other, database leaders Oracle and IBM are responding to MySQL’s sudden emergence as a competitor by releasing free entry-level versions.

Phil Windley over at IT Conversations has just posted audio of Jeff Waugh’s 2005 EuroOSCON presentation.
Jeff Waugh gives a lively and entertaining rebuttal to Asa Dotzler’s provocative OSCON challenge to the free software developers engaged in the “Search for the Linux Desktop”. For the desktop to become a more pleasing experience, Waugh argues, software creators must understand that 99% (or even 99.99%) of the population doesn’t care all that much about computers. The kind of people who hang out at OSCON may not always “get” what the average person is experiencing or wanting from their computer. To bridge this gap, a recent cultural shift among GNOME developers has put more focus on user interface, stability and universal access. Migration to Linux from proprietary operating systems is still a tough nut, but there is some progress there too.
PS, we’re getting ready to unveil the program and open registration for EuroOSCON 2006, which is happening in Brussels, September 18-21. Keep your eye on the EuroOSCON homepage for details.
Sam Williams writes that “measuring exactly who’s looking at what and for how long, some experts say, is the Web’s new gold.” He cites several examples of how new companies and projects, many featured at ETech, are addressing attention.
Tim O’Reilly has some thoughts on Sam’s article over on the O’Reilly Radar, too: “‘Attention’ is one of the important vectors for thinking about ‘collective intelligence,’ which is really the lynchpin of Web 2.0.”
The Summer of Code 2006 is on, sez Slashdot and Chris DiBona:
chrisd writes “The Summer of Code is officially on again this year. As of today, we’re taking in applications from mentoring organizations, so watch that list of mentoring organizations grow! Then, starting May 1st, we’ll start taking student applications. We’ve prepared two FAQs, one for Mentors and one for Students. We’ve also have created an IRC channel and Google Group for you. The website for the Summer of Code can be found at http://code.google.com/soc/.”
Notes OSCON program chair Nat Torkington in the O’Reilly Radar:
I’m very pleased to have Chris DiBona (the father of Summer of Code) at OSCON to fill us in on how the 2006 edition is going.
