Subject:   MIcrotrack 24/96 Battery

I have had my Microtrack 24/96 for almost 4 years. I use it with a Sennheiser ME66 and a CAD GXL2200 condensor mic. I am happy with the audio performance of the device, but I am very disappointed with the battery life. It is not a matter of not holding up for a 4 hr performance; it now won't hold up for a 5 min performance. The battery was clearly degrading by the 6 month point and has gone down hill since then. I have been forced to haul around a USB power source to make it portable. The new Kensington USB power pack is small enough that you can attach it to the back of the 24/96 with some double-stick foam tape and use a short cable to connect them. The combination is twice as thick, but it gets you out of trouble. Besides, my mics are bigger than the recorder anyway. I would not recommend this unit or the newer model simply because of the use of a proprietary/non-user-replaceable battery. Nobody would buy a digital camera today that had a non-replaceable battery (though some people seem to be willing to buy Apple products with that "feature").
