I'm currently finishing my phd, and switching over from OS 9 to X was a godsend. The straw was when OS 9 locked up in the middle of writing a chapter, simply using Word. After switching, I realize how much I dislike the old system. Currently I'm reliant on Excel for some data analysis and Word for its integration with Endnote.
