  Using InDesign CS3's Auto-Numbering Feature Across Stories

I'm curious does this feature only work on multiple file documents?


Everytime I try and use this feature in a single file document, if I set the first chapter to 1. and the second chapter to 2. in numbering and section options, it always changes the first chapter to 1.


Any help would be appreciated.
