This is an old problem with a lot of small "decks". The workaround on the old Sony dats was to make/purchase a small male/female extension cable to plug into the jack. The male side plugs into the units jack, the female side is then attached to the side of the unit (rubber band, velcro, gaffers tape), or to a bag or case that you keep it in. In a perfect world, you have a very small hard case (pelican, etc..), and the female side of the extension cord is a recessed surface mounted jack that you've installed in the case. The basic idea is to sacrifice the jack instead of deal with repairing the $500 recorder.
