Hello from a noob to this field. Can someone recommend an affordable alternative to the XLR-1? I'd like to use a Rode NT4 mic with the PCM-D50 but need a power interface that won't result in an altered or negligible signal. I was thinking of going with an M-Audio "Audio Buddy" (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/AudioBuddy-main.html), but am not certain it will meet my needs. Can someone recommend this product or something similar? thanks. Great review.

  I am using the PCM-D50 with the Rode NT4 without any power supply. Just put an 9volt battery in your NT4, be sure to disable the plug-in power fonction on your PCM-D50 and Voilą! The sound is just fantastic (no noise , no hum, just pure sound!) you'll love it. For micrphones like the Sony ECM-680S wich requires 48v phantom power, you will have to go with the XLR-1. The plug-in power of the PCM-D50 is not powerful enough for microphones working on externel power.

  I also am new to this. After much research, I finally decided to purchase the pcm-d50, and am looking forward to its arrival. I also purchased Rode NT4 mics, along with some other accessories. I held off on purchasing the XLR-1 connector, as I was uncertain if I really need it. If it turns out I need it, I'll buy it. If I can get by on this set up for awhile, then great. So, I'd love to confirm what I am understanding here. It sounds like I will not need the XLR-1 connector. The NT4 mics, with its mini plug adapter, can sustain its own power?
