MAYBE I just happen to have a bad unit or some people on here are not picky about inherent noise. We use the R-09 for recording interviews and have used both the on-board mic and external high end mics and I have to tell you that the noise floor is very high. The unit simply has a very cheap mic-pre-amp. I have an old Marantz Cassette recorder which is quieter. Serioulsy! The unit is frankly useless to us and to make matters worse I get no help from the the Roland people. If you want an expensive recorder for rock, pop or country, it might work for you but for quiet interviews or classical music...forget it. It's far too noisy.
