Battery Life on H4

I work in a radio station in Ireland, and have been using the H4 to record post-match interviews. I find the machine very useful, particularly for it's USB facility, which allows me e-mail audio to the studio.. However, I have a major problem with the battery life of the machine. After only minimal use, I got the 'low battery' warning, and after taking even greater care the next time (using the AC adapter whenever possible), it was no time until the next set of batteries ran-out! There's no way I'm getting anything near 4/4.5 hours of recording or playback. Was wondering if anyone else had the same problem, or what's causing the battery to use up so quickly?
