Following the advice of disconecting the coaxial cable from the cable box I eliminated the hum. I requested a service call from the cable company. The fellow that came out flat denied that it was a grounding problem of the cable company even though I showed him that the disconnecting the cabel got rid of the hum.
The next thing I tried was to take a subwoofer cable and disconnect the shield at the far end of the plug. There was no change in the hum.
I happened to notice that there was a ground screw on the back of my amp. I took a wire and connected it to the ground screw and touched the other end to one of the RCA jacks on the subwoofer and the noise disappeared. I subsequently conneted the wire to the ground side of an RCA plug and connected it to the RCA jack. It seems to be working, but could I have done something else more technically correct?
