reading this article ... where have i seen or heard or done this before? oh, right! http://emusician.com/mag/emusic_liftoff/

joking aside, it's amazing to me how, on the one hand: "la plus ca change" - and on the other: how much better eSession is than Rocket ever could've been. increased bandwidth (and thereby no compression) helps a lot, but working with stems makes much more sense than "renting virtual studio space", and is more like a "real" studio experience.

i also like the "you have to be able to play THIS well before taking this ride" attitude (as opposed to Rocket's "music for the masses, any idiot wannabe with cash can join" policy) plus, ya gotta love the "half up front, half on delivery" payment system (i always thought the biggest problems with Rocket was the only people making money with it ... was Rocket)

i do have some philosophical issues with the system, and still believe there's some magic in "everybody in the same room, at the same time, feeling the same vibrating air molecules", but the results speak for themselves, and i'm also a firm believer in "whatever works!" i guess communication by any other name should sound so good ...

thanks for an excellent article! (plus that deja vu feeling makes for a nice break in the day :)

    Peter,

I completely agree that there is magic with all the musicians in the same room and I worked that way for many years.

As you know, the industry and the budgets have changed and now the projects i work on can't afford to fly in a world-class musician. So, the choices are to bring in someone local who may or may not do as good of a job as the major session guy I wanted or I can use eSession and record my parts ala carte...

To throw out a metaphor.. Sometimes I want to get in my car and go to Barnes and Noble and buy a Starbucks and browse the books for an hour or two and sometimes I just wanna get on Amazon and have a book delivered to my door. The world definitely benefits from the convenience of Amazon but by no means does it replace the vibe of being in a brick and mortar bookstore... you get the point....

I know that eSession will never replace the magic of traditional recording, but with the advances in technology and the state of the industry, I genuinely hope that eSession can happily and successfully co-exist with conventional standards and simply give people an alternative IF and WHEN they need it.

Most of us in the music industry are hurting right now and I am hoping eSession will sincerely help these incredibly talented session musicians and engineers who have fewer and fewer sessions these days. At the same time, I am hoping people around the world benefit from hiring them.

thanks for the feedback. Come try out the site. I do personal tours every day at 2PM. It will blow you away, I promise.

    Thanks again,

    Gina Fant-Saez

Thanks for reading, Peter! Yes, the lineage from Rocket is clear, but as you note, big steps forward. BTW, although the eTalent players may turn down projects (for whatever reason), the esession folks emphasize that they're creating a welcoming environment for all, including adding a "concierge" service for people who feel they need some advice or guidance before getting started.
