As well as role models being important in the 'traditional' sense, i.e. as having someone else who 'got there' before you, I think having more women around is good in general for your workplace - you can share issues and fears with them in ways you can't always with older/more senior male colleagues. I'm finishing up a PhD in CS and I'm the only girl in my group. I'm trying to work out what to do next and though people are always happy to chat about it, they're not always good at understanding my worries about family, children, etc....This is just to give a simple example. |
