Careers advice is often legendarilly naff, theres a few good comedy sketches on it. "So you like swimming, have you thought of the navy?" ;) Most people have to find their own path or get saved by the 'one good teacher'. I wanted to be a programmer from the age of 10, I didn't need to be told. A company I worked for took part in a women in IT program, I think this is generally too late. Interest needs to be spiked at a young age like you found.
