What I like about it is its simplicity - you can operate with one hand. It is smaller and lighter and simpler to operate than the other comparable units. Still, like anything else, it takes time to learn. I mostly use the included stereo condenser mics but am starting to experiment with external mics. The built in gain boost on the menu helps with some mics, and isn't available on some other models which get lower levels with external mics.
I think it is the best, but people with the bigger, more complex H4 prefer the ability to use regular AA batteries, the Microtrack has a built-in rechargeable. The rechargeable works fine for me - I just recorded a 3-4 hour rehearsal with my band on one charge, on a 250mb compact flash memory card without a hitch. You can use USB power, so Ipod USB battery extenders work too. A lot of people online complain about the built in battery, but it is a non issue in real use unless you plan to be away from a power outlet in the Amazon or something for a long time. In that case, your Ipod, with built in battery, won't last either.
The Ipod has become the one of the biggest phenomena in the history of phenomena, yet it has a built in battery (which also gets lots of complaints). So that is truly a non issue. A good design is not killed by a battery being built in or not...and the Microtrack is a good design in my opinion.
