Is it strictly necessary to disable the firewall? Is it possible to open port 22 or any other needed ports while leaving the firewall running?

  I haven't had an opportunity to test that out. This worked well for me. Once you're broken through, you can install System Preferences by copying it over from an Intel machine and control your firewall settings more closely.
