The mic pre-amps in the MicroTrack 24/96 are better than those in the Marantz and Edirol recorders, but even so, they have only 16-bits of dynamic range. The other recorders have the same or less (one of them has only 14-bits of dynamic range despite being called a 24-bit recorder)!
That being so, it doesn't make any sense to record with 24-bits if you're using the internal mic pre-amps. That's just a waste of storage space.
The way to get true 24-bit performance is to use an external mic pre/A-to-D-converter like the Core Sound Mic2496 or Grace Lunatec V3 to feed the MicroTrack's S/PDIF input. (The Edirol doesn't have an S/PDIF input.)
The Mic2496 is fully portable (it runs on batteries) and provides true 48 Volt phantom power.
