10 years ago I had a camcorder which used a white translucent cap for white balancing (you had to turn it on with the cap on). Technically, there is very little to it, you are just capturing ambient light through. I suggest the author try out a few pieces of white/gray translucent plastic like from a milk jug and see if he does not get the same results.
